We’ve put together a list of the best surf beaches in Fuerteventura, visit our surf trip guide to Fuerteventura if you’re after a more detailed guide to the island. Situated in the Spanish Canary Islands, Fuerteventura has beautiful warm sunshine all year round and some of the best surf spots out of all the Canaries.
Most of the surf beaches and spots we’ve found in Fuerteventura are best for beginners although we have slipped in a couple of intermediate and expert spots (don’t even think of attempting these as a beginner!). Thankfully there are plenty of beginner surf spots on the island to keep you busy during your trip. We’d definitely advise getting some lessons if you’re a complete newbie to surfing and even if you’ve had some lessons already. It’s always a good idea to get advice and pointers from someone who knows the surf spot well as currents and conditions can often be unpredictable and safety is always the top priority.
Book surf lessons here.
Just a short walk from the centre of Corralejo you’ll find Rocky Point, a perfect spot for beginners. The wave here breaks over the reef, the main hazard to look out for if you’re surfing here! It can sometimes feel a bit busy here due to the number of newbie surfers taking lessons with surf schools at this spot. The right hand wave breaks nearest to the shore with the left hand wave further out.
Two kilometres to the South of Corralejo is a long sandy stretch of beach you’ll find Flag Beach. It’s beautiful spot flanked by huge rolling sand dunes with volcanic mountains visible in the distance. It’s not only popular with surfers but with kite surfers and windsurfers too. You’ll find a small beach bar and kit and windsurfing centre (Flag Beach Windsurf & Kitesurf Centre) on the beach where you can get some surf lessons. There’s beautiful views out to over the turquoise sea of Lanzarote and Los Lobos to the north. Surf booties are recommended here as there are some stones in the water but it’s mainly made up of a sandy bottom where the wave breaks to the left and right.
Located near the sand dunes between Corralejo and Puerto del Rosario, El Burro is a great spot for beginners with experience. It’s at its most reliable in summer and is popular with wind surfing, kite surfing and bodyboarding. The main hazard here is avoiding wiping out on the volcanic reef if conditions cause the waves to be big. The wave is mainly a left with a shorter right hander and best surfed at mid to low tide.
A short walk to the south of the sleepy El Cotillo town you’ll find a great little surf spot that has perfect conditions in the summer (avoid in winter) for those with some surf experience. Down the path from the rocky cliffs is sandy beach, the waves break over a sandy bottom here and you don’t need to paddle far to catch the waves. In the winter months the sandy sea floor gets washed out and the currents become pretty powerful, it can be unpredictable and dangerous for new surfers so avoid during this time. There is a lifeguard on this beach, theives have been known to target the vehicles parked up on the cliffs here so don’t leave any valuables on display.
Another spot that is a favourite for local surf schools, Playa Blanca is close to Puerto del Rosario and the islands airport (just off the FV-2 motorway). It’s not the most picturesque beach on the island but as a surf spot it’s a good place to learn as the waves aren’t too powerful.
Warning: Experienced/Advanced Surfers only
A beautiful setting for a bit of surfing, Los Lobos is a volcano that’s just a short ferry ride from Corralejo. It’s best to take a day trip here to get the most out of it but this surf spot but it’s well worth the effort because of its barrelling right-hander that breaks over a shallow reef. You can see why this surf spot is popular, it’s apparently the longest wave in the Canary Islands! Its a pretty consistent wave and provides opportunities for all levels. The best conditions tend to be from between October and March. Avoid if you’re a beginner.
Bring provisions, plenty of water for the trip and do check the ferries last departure time to make sure you don’t miss the last one!
Warning: Experienced/Advanced Surfers only
You can reach The Bubble just before getting to El Heiro if you’re traveling west from Corralejo. The powerful consistent waves break both left and right here providing some tubes at times. The waves break over volcanic rock so it can be very hazardous at times and should only be surfed by the very best.
Warning: Experienced/Advanced Surfers only
El Hierro is the most famous surfing spot on the island for the reliability of its waves. The waves break over the volcanic reef here and it can be hazardous and should only be surfed by experienced/advanced surfers only. You can get to the beach by following the rough dirt track that runs all the way from the centre of Corralejo.
If you don’t fancy taking the dirt track in your vehicle you can take Calle la Cancela just off the FV-109, the road surface is good but you do have to drive along the dirt track roads at Majanicho and parallel to the coastline to reach El Hierro beach.
So there you have it, plenty of epic surfing spot in Fuerteventura for a range of different levels offering up some beautiful scenery and awesome surf.
